The FBI did not have undercover agents participating in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. However, the Justice Department’s Inspector General confirmed that there were 26 FBI informants, referred to as “confidential human sources” (CHSs), in Washington, D.C., that day. Of these, four entered the Capitol during the riot, and 13 entered the restricted area around the Capitol. None of these informants were authorized by the FBI to break the law or encourage others to do so. This information was part of a report released by the Justice Department’s watchdog, which aimed to clarify the FBI’s role and actions before and during the event.
